PURPOSE

ACTIVITY

The highlighted promotional activity for the library will be an information session about changes to the Canada’s plant hardiness zone. The event will talk about the change in Canada’s plant hardiness zone due to climate change and the impact on existing horticultural practices. This event was chosen because it aligns with the library’s purpose, its promotional goals, and its primary audience. The picture for the event shows some lemons growing on a tree. This image was chosen because it is bright and enticing since citrus trees are not something typically grown in Ontario.

COLOUR SCHEME

Picture
Colour scheme for website.
The colour scheme of the promotional materials will be green, brown, and cream since these colours are closely associated with nature. Plants and the outdoor are known to be psychologically soothing, so having a colour palette reminiscent of that creates a positive association for patrons.

Green also symbolizes growth, renewal, and sustainability, aligning with ecologically conscious values. Brown adds a grounding, earthy quality that conveys authenticity and trustworthiness. Cream is a neutral colour that softens the palette and balances out the more vibrant and darker colours.

Altogether the three colours evokes a feeling of harmony with the environment. Since the library is located within a botanical garden, this colour scheme would complement the library's surroundings.

METHODS

PRINT

Posters would be ideal for high foot traffic areas such as Toronto Botanical Garden and local nurseries. This is because people who are usually visiting a botanical garden or shopping at a nursery may not want to hold a flyer or pamphlet the whole time. A poster is eye-catching in busy places and people can take a photo of it with their phones to reference later. Flyers and pamphlets would be better suited for botanical and horticultural organizations such as the Toronto Bonsai Society since they often host events where flyers, pamphlets, and other reading materials are given out. People will be more inclined to take a flyer or pamphlet home in this setting. The posters and flyers will have a matching designs so as to complement each other. Library technicians will create these promotional materials with the actual printing being most likely outsourced.
DIGITAL

The library will use methods such as social media posts on sites such as X to garner interest and blog posts on sites such as Blogger for those who want more in-depth information. Additionally, the library will liaison with the Toronto Botanical Garden and other horticultural organizations to promote these activities on their sites and social media as well. Library technicians will create these promotional materials with assistance from technical staff.

WEBSITE PLAN

LAYOUT & DESIGN

The website for the library will have the same colour scheme as the promotional materials for cohesion.
There will be a banner header with the name of the library and below that there will be a navigation bar listing the following pages: Events, Catalogue, Seed Library, Membership, and Contact Us. The elements of each page are listed below.

Events: Current events, registration forms, past events, feedback forms
Catalogue: Online catalogue of the library's resources, placing holds and loans (requires membership)
Seed Library: Catalogue of current seed collection, "loan" policy, information on seed donations,
Membership: Cost of membership, benefits of membership, loan policy
Contact Us: Contact information, address, library hours

The website will be mobile friendly so that patrons can use it on their phones. More and more people increasingly use their phones as their main electronic device for accessing the Internet so it is important to adapt to patron habits. A mobile friendly site will be especially useful if patrons need to look up the event information while on the go or if they want to share a link to an event via social media.
HOMEPAGE

The homepage for the library will be promoting its current most events and its collections in a picture carousel. Below that will be a calendar on left half of the page detailing that month’s events at both the library and Toronto Botanical Garden and the location and hours of operations will be listed on the right half of the page.
UPDATES

The site will update regularly as events come and go so that it will always display information about the latest events or the library’s collection. There will also be routine maintenance website to make sure it is working as intended and security updates to mitigate the risk of being compromised in a cyber attack.
PROMOTIONAL METHODS

The the navigation bar is organized in a way so as to flow with the library’s promotional goals. The library’s goal first and foremost is to encourage people to use the library. By putting Events first, we are prioritizing in-person visits. The Catalogue and Seed Library provides further sources of enticement for potential patrons to visit. Once the patron knows what is in the Catalogue and Seed Library, they may be more inclined to look at the Membership page and sign up for a membership. Lastly the Contact Us page provides contact information in case potential patrons have questions.

EVALUATION

MEASURING SUCCESS

Event registration numbers, event turnout numbers, and library membership numbers will recorded for the promotional events as a way to measure the success of the promotional methods.
DETERMINING SUCCESS

If event registration numbers and event turnout numbers are similar, that means people were invested enough to follow through in attending the event. An increase in library memberships especially after an event implies that the attendees were successfully convinced of the benefits the library could provide in their horticultural practices.
